How to Remove Old Safari Plugins

posted by pimpmysafari on (1 year, 11 months ago)

Safari 5 is here and old plugin functionality is quickly becoming replaced by extensions. Plugins like Safari Adblock are being replaced by new tools like Adblock for Safari.

But how do you remove the old plugins to get them out of the way?

The safest thing to do is check the website of the plugin software for removal instructions. Because Safari didn't have a good plugin architecture, developers were forced to inject their software in some tight places in the operating system.

What if you can't find instructions?

Many plugins were implemented with what are called Input Managers. That's not the only way, but it is probably the most common. So if you cannot find instructions, a good place to look is in the /Libary/InputManagers/ directory.

Here you see that I have 1Password and Safari140 plugins installed.

If your plugin is here, it should be as simple as deleting that directory and restarting Safari.

You will need to have Admin access to delete these files.
